Break it up Beaver! A fun way to learn tens and units
3rd Dec 2025
In this engaging classroom activity, students explored partitioning numbers up to 50 into tens and units. The activity began with one student typing a number into the calculator, while their partner used 10p and 1p coins to represent the same amount. Next, another student demonstrated the number using an arrow card, and a fourth student showed it with Dienes blocks. Finally, the student with the calculator revealed the correct answer, reinforcing the concept of place value. To ensure all students could participate, we followed up with a fun cut-and-stick exercise, adapting the activity to suit different learning styles. The children thoroughly enjoyed the task and successfully achieved the learning outcome, "Break it up Beaver," as they developed their understanding of partitioning numbers into tens and units.
