Deep diving into our new topic in Y3H!

26th Nov 2025

This term, Primary 3 embarked on an exciting and immersive journey into our new topic, 'Under the Sea.' This theme has proven to be incredibly versatile, providing a wealth of cross-curricular lessons and offering fantastic opportunities to develop complex thinking skills through rich Activity Based Learning (ABL).

Exploring the Ocean's Layers and Life

In our core lessons, we explored the fascinating world of the ocean's layers. During ABL, we applied this knowledge by creatively constructing the layers of the ocean using different shades of blue and green. We then accurately populated these layers with sea animals, ensuring each creature was placed in its correct habitat based on our newly acquired subject knowledge.

Our role-play area transformed into a dynamic space for literacy and imagination! We used our classroom theatre to re-enact the beloved Julia Donaldson story, 'The Snail and the Whale,' and children had the thrilling opportunity to imagine life as a marine biologist while tending to our very own aquarium.

Our Favourite Focus: Sea Turtles 🐢

Without a doubt, the highlight of the topic has been learning about sea turtles!

  • Anatomy and Creation: We utilized the Creation Station to make our own 3D sea turtles, which was a hands-on way to master the vocabulary of their anatomy.
  • Research Skills: We then sharpened our research skills using fact sheets and KIDDLE to compile fact cards detailing the sea turtle's habitats, life cycle, and diet.
  • Digital Learning: Our iPads were put to excellent use as we created custom underwater images and accompanying text using Just2Easy.

Artistic Endeavours

To complete our learning about sea turtles, we thoroughly enjoyed exploring art techniques. We used oil pastels to learn about warm colors, mastering blending and smudging to perfectly capture the texture and hues of a Hawksbill sea turtle. We were all delighted with the vibrant results of our artwork. Then to bring all our subject knowledge together we created our very own turtle dioramas. What a talented bunch!
