Year 2 Phonics Fun: Exploring the Long “a” Sound
This week in Primary 2CB, the children had a fantastic time deepening their understanding of phonics by focusing on the long “a” sound. Particularly the a_e, ai and ay spelling patterns. Through a range of practical, hands-on activities, the class actively explored how these patterns work in different words.
The children began by using picture cards with words and sorted them into three groups:
Words containing a_e(eg.,cake, lake)
words containing ai(eg., rain, rail)
words containing ay(eg., play, tray)
This activity encouraged the children to carefully listen for sounds and identify the correct spelling pattern. It also supported their ability to make connections between sounds and the written words in a fun and interactive way.
All activities were carefully adapted to meet the needs of every child.
Additional support and scaffolding were provided for children who needed it, ensuring they could confidently participate and succeed.
Children who were ready for more challenge extended their learning by:
Matching ai, ay and a_e words to pictures
Creating more complex words using magnetic letters.
Even thinking of their own words with the long “a” sound.
By the end of our session, all the children developed a clear understanding of the a_e phonics variation for the long”a sound: They demonstrated growing confidence in:
Recognising different spelling for the same sound
Sorting and categorising words
Building and reading words independently
Well done P2CB it was wonderful to see such enthusiasm from you as you sorted, matched and made words containing the long “a” sound.
